These pages contains resources we have used and recommend for this time period, and a few new ones we've just bought on high recommendation by those we trust and are trying.

This page lists core resources (that cover the whole time period) listed with a bit of comment. Other pages list living histories, narrative and fiction, and biographies we have and may use for this study, probably listed with no further comment from me at this time. You can read my blog telling of my plans in using them beginning here.

Thank you for your order through our links. It helps support the many aspects of "free" ministry from Me and My House.

13174: Sketches from Church History

Sketches from Church History
By S.M. Houghton / Banner Of Truth

This book and Building the Nation below are the backbone for our studies this term. We read the "bigger picture", putting things into context in these two resources, then choose specific aspects and expand them in more depth with other living books.

This book outlines the thrilling story of the onward march of the Church of Christ from the earliest times to the end of the nineteenth century. It is not a dry-as-dust account of long-forgotten events and controversies, but rather a moving record of those who undertook the adventure of faith before us and, through their courage and steadfastness, left an example for the church in every age. Reading of the exploits of those who have gone before us, through times of prosperity and times of persecution, should stimulate, warn and encourage the church in our own age to persevere in the same path, and obtain the same everlasting reward.

Building the Nation by Charles Coffin. Written by an eyewitness reporter of the Civil War, this book covers the time from after our Constitution was adopted to Abraham Lincoln's election. Republished by Mantle Ministries, but currently out of print. Free online download available. A great history series, (first book is Story of Liberty) tying world events together and told in an interesting way. Sketches from Church History will bring more detail in what God is doing in His church around the world.

Boys of '61 also by Coffin, tells the story of the Civil War itself. He has several others that break it down even further. It (and they) too can be found online to download.

Universal History in Perspective by Emma Willard. Written in the mid-1800's. Out of print. Super resource for all of world history. Our high schooler is reading this to bring in more of the world perspective.

A Basic History of the United States by Clarence Carson. Available from Cumberland Books and also on audio by Blackstone, from audible.com. This series is super on underlying causes and such. Not "just the facts, m'am." Written for upper teens and adults. Another for upper high school students.

0840245: American History in Verse

American History in Verse
By Burton Stevenson / Journeyforth

We are enjoying reading history through poetry, choosing a poem per week from this book to go along with our theme for the week.

Learn poetry and American History together, as you work your way through a comprehensive collection of verse, chronologically grouped and conveniently indexed. Contains a detailed table of contents, biographical notes and more. Authors include John Greenleaf Whittier, Long- fellow, Tennyson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and an extensive collection of writers on each era from Columbus to World War II. Can be adapted to elementary, middle school, and high school, for learning, recitation, and an in-depth understanding of the history of the United States.

For two varying perspectives: Marshall tells the North side, that we normally hear, only from a Christian perspective. Wilkins, in the 1800's part of this series, tells the South side, a side we rarely hear since the South lost. It is worth hearing, even if you don't fully agree.:

America: The First 350 Years (audio and syllabus pages) by Steven Wilkins. Now put on mp3 CD and VERY inexpensive. Available from Lifetime Books and Gifts. We will just bring in certain points from this.

From Sea to Shining Sea (and "for Children" version) by Peter Marshall. And Sounding Forth the Trumpet (and "for Children".) See our main HisStory Resources and Recommendations page for more detail. We aren't using these this time around, but they can also be used as a "backbone" for your study.

96845: A Child's Story of America, Second Edition: Grades 4-5

A Child's Story of America, Second Edition: Grades 4-5
By Michael McHugh / Christian Liberty Press

This contains great stories, that your younger ones can read on their own, for certain events in the time period; but does not give a complete big picture of the times. There are several good books of this type, written in the 1800's. You can find many of them online as Free downloads and several like this one have been republished (and sometimes expanded and/or edited) by Christian Liberty Press.

From the launching of the Santa Maria to the landing of the space shuttle, U.S. history has unfolded under divine authority. Introduce your fourth and fifth graders to heroic figures and important events including John Winthrop, George Washington, Sam Houston, the signing of the Mayflower Compact, the Great Awakening, the Boston Tea Party, and more. Includes end-of-chapter study questions. 202 pages, softcover.

78311: Abraham Lincoln's World

Abraham Lincoln's World
By Genevieve Foster / Beautiful Feet Books

This is an interesting story of the times, but not from a Christian perspective. We aren't using this one this time around. We're looking at other perspectives than given here.

In the years which saw the birth and babyhood of Abraham Lincoln, dramatic events were unfolding across the globe. Thomas Jefferson was completing his eighth year as president, George III was still reigning over England and Napoleon would shortly be defeated at Waterloo. In the worlds of music and literature, Beethoven and Sir Walter Scott were creating some of their best works while Victor Hugo was staging plays at school. When Lincoln began to romp the backwoods of Indiana and help his father chop wood and plow the fields, other young boys and girl's hearts and minds were forming for the party they would play in the future of the world, Ulysses S. Grant was born, Harriet Beecher was reading anything she could get her hands on, Darwin was collection toads, crabs and sells and the boy Dickens was working in a London shoe blacking factory. When Lincoln became a shopkeeper, England defeated China and took over Hong Kong, Texas won it's independence and gold was discovered in California! The Oregon Trial would open, while David Livingstone would open the way to deepest Africa. This period would see the end of monarchies, serfdom and slavery, the dawn of the railroad, the telegraph and the steamboat. Abraham Lincoln's World is the dramatic story of the life and times of one of America's greatest leaders and of the inspiring part he play in preserving this great nation. Recommended for ages 9 and up, 345 pages. A 1945 Newbery Honor book.
